Monthly Merchant: Theatre of Wine's Bulgarian #WineWednesday Recommendation

It's #WineWednesday again! Already! Luckily, we have Theatre of Wine - our October Independent Wine Shop of the Month - to recommend a bottle of something special to mark the day.

With autumn officially settling in and the country's thermostat suffering a nasty drop, we're all begrudgingly turning the heating on and layering up with fluffy jumpers and big socks. There's no better time to curl up and enjoy a warming glass of red wine - especially if it's packed with concentrated flavour and brilliant smoothness. Jason at Theatre of Wine has just the thing:

Zagreus Vinica Mavrud 2011, Bulgaria

Thanks to investment and modernisation Bulgaria is undergoing a silent renaissance in both vineyard and cellar. At Theatre of Wine we have been championing these re-emerging wines for many years thanks to their unbeatable combination of unique flavour and - frankly - great prices.

Vinica (pronounced 'vin-IT-sa') is the flagship wine of the Zagreus estate, based near Assenovgrad in the Thracian Lowlands, long famous for the quality of its Mavrud. It is made with dried grapes to give richness and structure, rather like an Italian Amarone.

The flavour is brilliantly different, however - explosive and intense with notes of gentian, juniper and rosemary on a dry palate of black fruits and woodsmoke. A brilliant partner to food such as venison and winter braises and organic to boot. £14.40.

Theatre of Wine doesn't have an online shop yet, but don't worry! You can still order for UK-wide delivery - just give them a call or drop them an email.
