I have found Whisky Beer (I know, I'm a little late to the party...) and it's bloody brilliant.
I sometimes like to feel manly; I put on work boots, a flannel shirt, carry an axe and live in a cabin in the woods. However, there is often a problem in that I just can't decide what is more bloke-ish (its a real word, honest), a decent beer or a whisky.
Someone has clearly had the same problem as myself and just thought, "Fuck it, we'll stick them together and see what happens..." and it worked.
I have picked up a couple of different "Whisky beers" from Tesco lately and the one that has really stood out for me as something really special is Boilermaker Welsh Whisky IPA, which is made by Brains Craft Brewery in Wales.
What the bottle-blurb says:
Brewed with Chinook, Simcoe, Cascade and Willamette hops and matured with Penderyn whisky infused oak chips in casks from the distillery, the arts of distillation and brewing combine to create an epic Welsh IPA adorned with a fragrant citrus aroma, a touch of spice with hints of vanilla and a warm whisky finish.
What I say:
I think this is bloody lovely stuff; it smells delicious, with an ever-so-slight hint of whisky coming through on the nose but not too much that it confuses it's identity. This is not so overly whiskyed that you would think it is a whisky flavoured beer - like the strawberry beers and honey beers that are on the market at the moment. This is a good beer at heart and the notes that it has picked up from the whisky casks just give it a certain edge. Although certainly not overly deep or complex, I think this ticks all the boxes as something easygoing and a bit different - you can try something new and you can't go wrong.
I'm not going to lie, the first time I tried this, I was sat in a bubble-bath - not a particularly manly moment - but Boilermaker certainly went some way to bringing things back into balance.
It tastes just as good while watching rugby and eating steak pie as it does in a bubble bath...
Boilermaker 6.5% IPA is available in a 330ml bottle from Tesco, for £1.97 - pick up a few bottles to boost your man-levels (or pick one up for your boyfriend/husband if he is ever acting like a big girls blouse...)
