Let's all get liberated.
Or, we could just drink the Liberator wines and pretend we are liberated... I dunno, just throwing it out there.
The Liberator's "This Bird Has Flown" is a South African blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay and Clairette Blanche made by Master of Wine and all-round good guy Richard Kelley, especially for The Wine Society.
I picked up a bottle the other day as I have always been a fan of just about every Liberator wine that I have ever tried and, having not come across this particular one before, I was keen to give it a taste.
Richard Kelley doesn't make wines to be easy drinking, he makes wines that cause you to stop for a minute and really think about what you are sipping. When I tasted this, for the first few seconds I wasn't too sure what to make of it, but then the flavours evolved amazingly.
The wine is hugely vibrant in colour, so much so that it looks a little bit too much like a de-hydrated pee but don't let that put you off (I am quite the word-smith, I know). The nose is pretty remarkable, it is perfumed and floral with beautiful tropical fruit flavours; the layers here are really stunning, there is a hell of a lot for your money.
On the palate the tropical fruit carries on with delicious pineapple and guava flavours, but it's now that this wine gets really interesting. The wine has a serious richness to it, that starts to come through on the palate, giving a slight sherried flavour. I find this is really lovely and interesting, but it may make this wine not to everyone's taste. But then again, if a product is made to be to everyone's taste, it is generally really boring anyway...
This is a very diverse and fascinating wine - one that is well worth trying if you are an avid wine drinker as it is beautifully unique.
You can pick up a bottle of This Bird Has Flown from The Wine Society for £11.95 so if you can, you definitely need to give it a try.
